Gentle Hamstring & Hip Release
Welcome to Day 3. If your legs are feeling a bit tired from yesterday's standing poses, you are in exactly the right place.
Today, we focus on releasing tension in two of the most chronically tight areas of the body: the hamstrings and the hips. We will take things slowly, holding stretches a little longer to allow the muscles to safely lengthen.
Today's Poses
Warm-Up — 2 min
We begin by warming the spine and backs of the legs.
Downward-Facing Dog
Beginner- 1. Start on your hands and knees in tabletop position.
- 2. Tuck your toes under, press firmly into your palms, and lift your hips up and back.
- 3. Keep a deep bend in your knees at first, focusing on creating a straight line from your wrists to your hips.
- 4. Slowly begin to "pedal" your feet, bending one knee while pressing the opposite heel towards the floor.
- 5. Hold for 5-8 breaths, feeling the stretch through your calves and hamstrings.
Today's Sequence — 6 min
Low Lunge
Beginner- 1. From Downward Dog, step your right foot forward between your hands. Drop your left knee to the mat.
- 2. Ensure your right knee is directly over your right ankle.
- 3. Inhale and sweep your arms up, or keep your hands resting on your right thigh for support.
- 4. Gently sink your hips forward and down, feeling a stretch in the front of your left hip (hip flexor).
- 5. Hold for 5 deep breaths, then switch sides.
Half Splits
Beginner- 1. From a Low Lunge with your right foot forward, shift your hips back until they stack over your left knee.
- 2. Straighten your right leg and flex your right foot, pointing your toes up.
- 3. Keep your spine long as you gently fold forward over your right leg.
- 4. You should feel a deep stretch in your right hamstring.
- 5. Hold for 5 breaths, then carefully switch to the left side.
Cool-Down — 2 min
Seated Forward Fold
Beginner- 1. Sit on the floor with both legs extended straight out in front of you.
- 2. Inhale, sit tall, and reach your arms up.
- 3. Exhale, hinge at your hips, and fold forward over your legs.
- 4. Let your hands rest on your shins, ankles, or feet—wherever they comfortably reach without straining your back.
- 5. Hold for 1 minute, allowing gravity to gently deepen the stretch.
Savasana
Close your eyes. Let your body be completely heavy. You have finished today's practice. Well done.
Today's Insight: The Difference Between Discomfort and Pain
When stretching tight muscles like the hamstrings, you will feel discomfort—a dull, pulling sensation. This is normal and safe. However, if you ever feel sharp, shooting, or pinching pain (especially near a joint), back out of the pose immediately. Yoga should never hurt.
